What Causes Body Odor? (Hint: It's Not Your Sweat)

Man applying ATTAS deodorant stick against a blue sky

You showered this morning. You put on deodorant. And by 4pm on a hot day, you can smell yourself again.

That doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. It means most of us were taught the wrong story about where body odor comes from.

Sweat doesn't smell. So what does?

The biggest misconception about body odor is that sweat causes it. It doesn't. Fresh sweat is almost odorless, as Cleveland Clinic puts it plainly. The smell is made later, on your skin.

Here's how. You have two kinds of sweat glands. Most of your body is covered in the ones that make watery, salty sweat to cool you down. Your underarms also have a second kind that switches on at puberty (which is why BO shows up in your teens). These make a richer sweat, and that's what the bacteria living on your skin like to eat.

As they break it down, they turn odorless sweat into the molecules you actually smell: sour, musky and, worst of all, sulfur-like. Scientists who map underarm bacteria have traced each smell to specific microbes. Researchers even found the exact tool one underarm bacterium uses to make that sulfur smell. Give that tool to bacteria that don't normally smell, and they start smelling too.

So body odor is a three-part recipe: bacteria, the sweat they feed on, and the skin where it all happens. Sweat is just one of the contributing factors, and the only one with real benefits (more on that below).

Why it comes back (and why some days are worse)

A shower washes off some of the bacteria and the sweat they feed on. But you start sweating again right away, the bacteria get back to work, and by mid-afternoon the recipe is complete again.

Some days give it more to work with. Cleveland Clinic lists hot weather, exercise, stress, hormones and food among the things that change how you smell. Stress switches on those underarm glands. Garlic, onion and red meat can change your scent. More heat means more sweat, which means more raw material.

One honest note: if your usual scent changes suddenly and you can't explain why, mention it to a doctor. Some health conditions change body odor too.

Why not just stop sweating? (The antiperspirant route)

You can. That's what an antiperspirant does: it uses aluminum salts to reduce sweat, and for plenty of people that's the right call.

But sweat is how you cool down. As it evaporates, it cools your skin and regulates your body temperature. And since sweat isn't the smelly part, you don't have to stop it to deal with odor.

Why doesn't covering it up fix it? (The standard deodorant route)

The classic deodorant works by masking odor with fragrance. It sits on top of the smell instead of dealing with it, with two catches.

First, it clashes. If you wear perfume, your deodorant is arguing with it all day.

Second, it can irritate. Fragrance allergy is the second most common cause of allergic skin rashes after nickel, and deodorant is a common source. It only affects around 1% of adults, but underarm skin is thin and gets shaved, rubbed and covered all day, so that's where irritation shows up.

The "natural" swaps aren't automatically gentler. Baking soda is alkaline (around pH 8.3) on skin that likes to sit at 4.0–6.0. Alum crystal is still aluminum. And irritation repeated day after day is one of the routes to darker underarms, as we covered in 3 Surprising Reasons Your Underarms Are Dark.

What actually helps: look after the whole skin

Put it together and body odor needs three things: bacteria, their food (sweat) and a place to work (your skin). Blocking sweat takes away the food, but also your cooling system. Masking ignores all three. That leaves the skin itself, and that's where we think the fix belongs.

Looking after underarm skin as a whole is mostly simple, everyday stuff. Cleveland Clinic's own tips are to wash daily so bacteria don't build up, help sweat evaporate (shaving helps, as do clean, loose cotton clothes) and apply products to dry skin. Add one more from our dark underarms article: treat it gently. Less scrubbing, fewer irritants. Calm skin feels better and is less prone to the irritation that darkens underarms; that part is mainstream skin science. Our belief goes one step further: healthy skin smells better too.

How we built ATTAS°: start with skin

Most deodorants stop at odor. Ours starts with skin. At our lab (L14N), that meant two things: take away what stresses underarm skin, and add what it needs.

What we take away: aluminum salts, alcohol, baking soda and parabens. ATTAS° ZERO also leaves out fragrance, so there's nothing to clash with your perfume.

What we add:

  • Persimmon-Bio (3.5%), for odor: a fermented Japanese persimmon extract that helps neutralize odor molecules instead of masking them. This is the part that does the smell work. To be straight with you, the published research on persimmon is mostly lab work on raw extracts, not underarm studies, so we say "helps," never "eliminates."
  • Zinc PCA: helps keep skin fresh and less oily.
  • Niacinamide 2%: supports the skin barrier and helps calm shaving irritation.
  • Flower acids: gentle renewal, for smoother, brighter-looking underarms with continued use.

The skin actives (zinc, niacinamide, flower acids) are dosed below the usual face-and-body levels, on purpose, so they suit underarm skin. We screen against the EU's 1,300+ restricted substances. It doesn't block sweat. It works on what makes odor, with all-day odor control.

On a heavy day, reapply after a shower or a change of shirt.

Quick answers

Why do I still smell after showering?

A shower removes some bacteria and sweat, but you keep sweating and the bacteria regrow. Odor forms when they break sweat down on your skin.

Deodorant or antiperspirant?

Antiperspirants use aluminum salts to reduce sweat. Deodorants don't block sweat; they work on odor.
